The lemon juice fast is a simple and effective way to boost your health. It is also known as the 10 Day Master Cleanse diet.

Various celebrities, such as Beyonce, have sung the praises of the lemon juice cleanse. With drastic weight loss stories and sexy bodies to boot, it’s no wonder that people are flocking to the lemon juice fast with excitement. As you can probably guess, the health benefits of lemon juice are pretty awesome.

People have fasted for thousands of years for a variety of reasons. Many of those reasons were and are religious, such as Lent and Ramadan. While religion may have been a strong influencer in causing people to fast, there is also a large body of medical research that suggests light fasting is beneficial to human health.

Even if you’re not religious, fasting (especially juice fasting) can have positive benefits of your body and mind.

Fasting itself can be done in a number of ways. The typical way to fast is a dry fast, where you consume no food and no water. Liquid fasting refers to fasting with water and juices and for that reason, the lemon juice fast fits into this category.

Along with dry and liquid fasting, there are an infinite number of variations that people have been known to practice. While fasting is generally beneficial, you must be careful to choose an appropriate fast for your overall health and lifestyle.

As with any changes to your diet, consult your health professional before beginning the lemon juice fast.

10 Day Lemon Juice Fast Cleanse


The fast that I’ll be describing here is known as the 10 Day Master Cleanse by Stanley Burroughs. It has also been called the Lemon Juice Maple Syrup Fast. It has been used by hundreds and thousands of people around the world to dramatically boost their overall health.

If you’re already healthy and in good shape, you probably don’t need to do the 10 day lemon juice cleanse. Anyone who is underweight, cold, weak, recovering from sickness, pregnant, has a heart condition, colitis, epilepsy and diabetes should refrain from doing it.

While this juice fast is relatively safe, especially when compared with other fasts, you must talk to a health professional before beginning.

How to Do the Lemon Juice Cleanse


For this fast, there are three main parts:

  1. Lemon Juice
  2. Salt Water
  3. Herbal and Laxative Teas

The Lemon Juice

  • 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons of maple syrup
  • 1/10 teaspoon cayenne pepper powder (use less if you can’t handle the spice)
  • 8 ounces / 250 mL of water

For 10 days, drink 6 to 12 glasses of this mixture each day. Drink water throughout the day whenever you feel thirsty.

Salt Water

  • 2 teaspoons of natural sea salt
  • 1 quart of lukewarm water

Drink the entire mixture in one go upon waking in the morning.

Beyond the 10 Day Lemon Juice Fast

On the first day after the 10 days (day 11), make fresh orange juice and drink whenever you feel the need.

On the second day, incorporate a variety of fruit and vegetable juice into your diet. If possible, also consume soup and broth. The increased intake of nutrients helps your body adjust back into its state.

On the third day, you can start eating again (YAY!). But don’t go out and gorge yourself on junk food. Instead, eat only live foods. Consume fresh, raw fruits and vegetables. Remove processed foods, meat and dairy, at least for this day.

On the fourth day (and the rest of your life), be sure to upgrade your eating habits. The lemon juice fast has likely cleansed you and restored your health, however you will lose these benefits if you consume an unhealthy diet.

Make a determined effort to eat healthy and get lots of exercise. Focus on fruits and vegetables and learn to look forward to going shopping for them. If you eat meat, eat only grass fed beef as well as dairy products that come from grass-fed cows. The benefits of healthy eating will change your life.

Quick Tips for an Awesome Lemon Juice Fast


Store your lemons on the counter to ripen, not in the fridge. When you refrigerate produce, the enzymes become dormant. If you buy a large number of lemons in preparation for the fast, always keep at least 10 out of the fridge. This will ensure that the enzymes are active when you juice them.

It goes without saying that the lemon juice needs to be fresh. Don’t even try the 10 day lemon juice maple syrup fast with bottled lemon juice. To make the lemon juice, you can use a citrus juicer or an electronic juicer. When I juice lemons, I use a centrifugal juicer, however a masticating juicer would work well too.
