Juice Fasting and Why it Works

Let’s take a look at fasting.

Fasting is the act of abstaining from some or all food and drink for a set period of time. There are an infinite variety of combinations of fasting that people practice. The reasons that motivate people come from things as esoteric as religion to practical reasons like the desire to be healthier.

During an absolute fast, a person does not consume food or liquid for a period of time. This means no food and no water, for because of that, it’s the most restrictive fast and it can the most dangerous.

In contrast to an absolute fast, some people fast in only a partially restrictive manner. They may limit particular foods or substances while allowing the consumption of some liquids.

As I said earlier, there are an infinite variety of options when it comes to fasting.

Learning how to juice fast is ONE of those options.

Learning how to juice fast can produce immense health benefits, including increased energy, drastic weight loss as well as the prevention and cure of sickness and disease. Juice fasting for weight loss is very popular.

Why does juice fasting work?

Juice fasting works because of the effect of fasting on digestion.

When you learn how to juice fast, you abstain from all solid foods. This has the effect of slowing and stopping digestion. There is simply nothing to digest.

Since digestion needs a large amount of energy to function, when it’s not happening, there is excess energy. This energy can have a variety of effects, including the benefits mentioned above.

Many people report clearer thinking, more energy in their daily activities as well as a profound sense of health and wellbeing.

One potential problem with absolute fasting is that there is no intake of phytonutrients. This can have disastrous effects, however, learning how to juice fast can mitigate and minimize these effects.

Fresh juice, in particular, fresh vegetable juice, is loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. However, since the act of juicing fruits and vegetables removes the fiber, juice cannot be called solid food. Without the fiber, fresh juice does not kickstart the metabolism.

This means that when you juice fast, you get the benefit of increased energy from no digestion while simultaneously providing your body with life-giving nutrients.

With the “liquid sunshine” in fresh juice, your body will quiver with delight. The extra energy that you have can be used to send those nutrients to where they are needed.

Now, let’s take a look at how to juice fast.

How to Juice Fast in 3 Easy Steps

1. Decide how long you will juice fast for.

As I said earlier, talk to your doctor before beginning any kind of fast. They will advise you on the optimal length and how to juice fast safely.

You can do a variety of lengths. Some people opt for 3 days as their first try. This is a great idea. When you get more experience, you can go for longer. More commonly, people fast for 8 days as part of a 21 day cycle, while some fast for as long as 92 days!

For the sake of this article, let’s assume you’re doing a 21-day cycle juice fast. Keep reading to learn how to juice fast for 21 days.

2. Decide on a schedule.

For the juice fast in question, you’ll be juice fasting for 8 days. After the fast, you’ll spend 3 days coming off the fast and 10 days on a 75% raw food diet.

You’ll need three weeks to pull this off.

Ensure you have a juicer, not a blender. A blender doesn’t remove the fiber, so if you use one, you won’t be fasting. Get yourself a good one for the fast, such as the Breville Juice Fountain Elite Juicer. You’ll get hooked and want to use it after anyway.

If you don’t have 21 days or 3 weeks with no work, then do the juice fast while you work. For your juice during the day, carry it to work in a bottle of some sort. While this isn’t ideal, it will allow you to juice fast despite the fact that you’re working.

To preserve the nutrients in the juice, the bottle will need to be airtight and opaque (to stop light getting in). To slow the breakdown of the nutrients, consider crushing up a vitamin C tablet and adding it to the juice.

3. Just do it!

Learning how to juice fast is simple – just do it. Don’t wait for the perfect time. Do it today. Or start tomorrow. At the very least, set a date and commit to it. That’s how you take advantage of the benefits of healthy eating.

Here’s how to make it through the 8 days fasting.

Drink as much juice as you feel the need to drink. You can have as much as you want. A word of advice – minimize fruits and maximize vegetables.

Why?

Fruits contain large amounts of natural sugar and while natural, this can upset your stomach and make it harder to complete the fast. Use fruits sparingly to sweeten vegetable juice up and make it more palatable. Vegetable juicing is better than fruit juicing.

As a general rule, drink 6 to 8 cups of fresh juice a day if you’re an adult.

Since juice has high water content, you’ll find yourself going to the restroom more often than usual. This is normal. Your body may also go through a detox period as it cleans itself out. Unless these detox symptoms are painful or severe, just go with it and stick to the routine.

As for what to juice, like I said above, focus on vegetables. You want the goodies, so drink the goodies. Vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and all sorts of yummies. For information about the benefits of specific fruits and vegetables, go to the health benefits of juicing, scroll down and click on whichever you want. This will help you learn how to juice fast.

Some vegetables (such as carrot and beetroot) can be high in sugar. This certainly won’t hurt and there are numerous benefits from them, however, be sure to include a variety of produce. Aim to get as much variety as possible.

Go the supermarket and buy up big – carrot, beetroot, spinach, cucumber, celery, ginger, cabbage, tomato, broccoli, apple, grapefruit, lemon, etc. Have fun with this. Take delight in the fact that you’ll be consuming a huge amount of nutrients that will supercharge your body and life.

Do the above for 8 days straight.

After the Juice Fast

To ride out the 21 days in style, here’s what you need to do after learning how to juice fast.

After the 8 days juice fasting, take 3 days to recuperate. Eat lightly for these 3 days. Focus on fruit, fruit salad, soups, broth and vegetables. Eat often, but eat less than you normally would. You need to let you body adjust back into its normal eating routine.

After the 3 days coming off the fast, you’ve got another 10 days to wind down (or up, depending on how you look at it).

For the next 10 days, aim to eat a 75% raw food diet. Eat as much as you want so long as 75% of it hasn’t been cooked. Take another trip to the supermarket and stock up on raw food. Fruits, vegetables and nuts all fit the bill. Begin your meals with a salad to ease your digestion into gear. For the 25% cooked part of your diet, aim for cooked vegetables and light grains.

While you might be craving meat, it’s better not to eat it yet as it tends to be very heavy and hard to digest. If you want a hit of protein, eat fish, as it’s very healthy and contains important nutrients. You can also eat eggs, cheese, yoghurt and raw cow’s milk.

If you’re at work, there should be a variety of options to maintain this diet. Where I live, juice bars and salad bars have sprang up everywhere. Go for a relaxed walk during your lunchtime break and find something healthy and raw.

Create a Juice Fast that SUITS YOU!

While you’ve learned how to juice fast today, you don’t have to do exactly the same juice fast described above.

If you want to change the duration, CHANGE IT. If you’re new to juicing, start with something easier, such as a 3 day juice fast. Take the 8 days above and make it 3. Ease out of the juice fast for 3 days after. If possible, consume a 75% (approx) raw food diet for a few days following.

The key here is to do what works for you. 8 days will be too long for some people. Just remember to keep the same principles, such as the fasting and cooling off period.

Pick your duration and remember to ease out of the fast at the end. I told you it was simple to learn how to juice fast. Now do it!
